How to complete a Konin Todoke Form / Japanese Marriage Application
Regardless of your nationality or passport, to get legally married in Japan you need to have a Konin Todoke Form/ Japanese Marriage Application completed.
A Japanese Marriage Application Form from the city office looks like this:
At the Okinawa Translator Office we have created our own themed version and we believe it is more festive for getting married:
The Japanese Marriage Application form must be completed in Japanese and our office can complete this for you after we have translated your documents into Japanese.
The marriage application must have two witnesses. My wife and I can be your witnesses and as we are Japanese residents we don’t have to come with you to the city office. If you want your own witnesses I will need their full names, birth dates, nationality and local address. They will accompany you at the city office on the day you get married.
If your spouse or partner is Japanese they can complete the marriage application form. Here is an instructional PDF written in Japanese to help your Japanese spouse complete the marriage application.
Hi,
I’m Australian nationality and my fiancé is Japanese nationality, was wondering what documents do I need from Australia for us to get married and marriage certificate in japan?
Kind regards,
Yuuko li.
Hi Yuuko, Thanks you for reaching our to me! Yes, we can help. You need to confirm with the city office what documents you need just to confirm although it will most likely be your passport, a CNI and CNI Application issued from the Australian Embassy or Consulate in Japan. If you would like us to research directly to that city office, email me: okinawatranslator@gmail.com

I have a Affirmation document from the UK Embassy, my birth certificate, passport.
Do I need any other documents to take to the city office?

Hello, I cannot thank you enough for doing all this.
I was wondering if there was already an English version of the application available or if they are planning on rolling one out in the future.
Sir, the document must be in Japanese and completed in Japanese when submitting it to the city office. We can help you with this.
Is it possible for two non-residents (Filipino and American) to marry in Japan?
Yes, you do not have to be a resident to get married at the city office. -Dave
Hi, thank you so much for your posts on this topic! My American bf and I (Filipino) are planning to get married here in Japan. I’m currently working here while he’s on an extended tourist visa. From your posts/comments, I learned that it was possible to marry on a tourist visa. But would you happen to know of cases where that tourist visa was converted to a dependent visa within Japan? Thanks so much!
Yes, you can get married on any type of visa but you need to obtain the correct documents.
