Documents necessary when reporting your Japanese Marriage Certificate at the IPAC Office (United States Marines + Navy) or MPF DEERS (Air Force + Army) in Okinawa, Japan.

If you have married to a Local National (Japanese Nationality) on Okinawa, here are a list of required documents you will need when reporting your marriage on base.

The first item is the Japanese Marriage Certificate. This will be issued from the city office in Japanese and our office can officially translate this into English for you and provide you with certified copies.

The second item is the birth certificate. In Japan, there are a few different types of documents that can be used to prove birth. Although, the offices on base accept a document called the Family Registry (Koseki Tohon).

The family registry issued before your marriage can be used, but it is usually several pages long and does not state the marriage information on it. We recommend you use an updated family registry that contains your marriage information and your spouse’s family name change. This updated version will only be 1 page.

The family registry before the marriage will be ready immediately to use, but the updated version usually takes the city office a couple days to issue. In any case, we can translate this document for you from Japanese to English.

The third item is 2 forms of ID. The primary form of ID that should be used is the passport. It can be used as is and does not need to be translated. Although, in some cases, some people do not have a passport, so you can use a Japanese Driver’s License and/or a My Number Card. The Japanese Driver’s License and Japanese My Number card are both in Japanese, so we can help you translate these into English.
